I thought this was an interesting exercises being that there were things that i wrote down that i had not before in my previous research, and it made me think of other ways to approach things. The reading was interesting in the sense that there are multiple ways to have success when brainstorming about things, whether it be these exercises or writing things down in a sketchbook. I have used these idea before but not for a long time, so it was nice to familiarize myself with these tactics again.

Concept statement:

The chimney smokes, the sky is low, smoke sweeps across the camp weighing upon us overwhelming us with the odor of burning flesh. All i can do is hope. Hope for the next day, hope for the next meal, hope that i don't get caught keeping a secret Journal. My main hope is to survive and someday show my proof and tell the story.

I don't think i like this one as much as the first ones that i came up with. I was trying to combine the smoky feel with some aspect of there being survivors and their tattoos to show as proof but i don't think they mesh well.

Concept Statement 2:

One day when i was able to get up, i decided to look at myself in the mirror. I had not seen myself since the ghetto. From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me.

Even though the holocaust was a horrific experience that many had to face. Many fought through it. Many fought to tell the story. Many wrote down journals of their experience, and hid them in their pockets, just hoping for the next day, the next ration of bread and soup. Many walk around with number tattooed on their arm. Those are survivors

Tina is a mother of two beautiful girls. She is Happily married of 15 years. In her free time she enjoys catching up with her three close friends over cocktails at the pub downtown. Tina would say that her life is pretty good right now.

Growing up Tina loved to read books. She was always fascinated about history. Whether it be the civil war, or how humans came to walk the earth, she just loved to read. Every Christmas she got 5 books that were at the top of her list. This tradition continued until she moved out onto her own, and started making a family for herself.

After having kids, she knew that reading was something that she wanted the entire family to enjoy, so she read to her kids before they went to sleep, and as they grew old enough they began to read on their own about books to their like. This gave Tina time to venture out on her own as well. Tina recently bought the book Night; she wanted to learn about something new. She was intrigued by the this book and decided that the holocaust serious was something she couldn't put down.

Roth is a middle aged Jewish man who teaches math in California. Roth was known to be an independent person that liked to read books in his free time. With all this free time Roth not only liked to look up books, but since his family had been disconnected due to most of them being deceased, he liked to research about the holocaust.

Roth didn't have those precious memories that are typical of a young boy. He remembered being alone, and living with a foster family. In doing his research he found out who his birth parents were and decided to look them up. In the journey of hunting them down. He found out a lot about his family and what they had to go through to get here to the US.

One would think that there comes a time when enough is enough, but for Roth knowing every bit of detail was a must have; its as if he almost became addicted.

Judie is an English major at the University of Purdue. She loves to read books, loves to get a causal drinks with her best friend Cynthia, and loves taking naps.

Cynthia is currently living in an apartment by herself, and is scared of everything. Anything that creaks or makes a noises she jumps at, She even sleeps with a bat under her pillow. Even thought that is not too comfortable she says" better safe than sorry". She tries to have anyone and everyone stay the night with her if she can. Cynthia tries to eliminate scary things by watching happy things to keep her mind occupied.

When the TV goes off, she uses books to substitute. Cynthia is currently taking a holocaust lit class, because her friend said it would be easy, and she loves to read so she thought what the heck. As she got into the books, she realized that the detail were horrible and gruesome and she just had to put the book down every time. She started getting nightmares and was freaked out at the sight of her book. She decided to change the order of the way she did things. Read the book in the day and Disney channel at night.

Index: is a sensory feature ( directly, visibly, audible, smellable, etc).

Visual: a stop light tells you that you should stop your car.

Verbal: oven beeping at you, saying that your cookies are finished.

To me there are a couple things that make a successful book jacket:

1. the way you handle your type treatment, either working with your visual element or working on its own. Some way i think the photo, and type should interact with each other on the page.

2. I think that if you are working on a subject matter that interest you, there is a very high chance of success. Good writing helps a designer put out a great outcome in a design.

3.Avoid being literal, i think that if you make the reader think about the message you are trying to portray rather that say what you are saying in black and white, makes the reader engaged more. I know when i read books the first thing i look at is the cover, and after i am finished reading the book, i always ask myself this question " why did this author decide to have this be their cover page design".

Author:Flilip Muller

The genre that i have chosen is the Holocaust. The first book that i chose was Night. This book is about a teenager named Elie Wiesel. Him and his family were taken from their home in 1944 to the Auschwitz concentration camp, and then to Buchenwald. This book is a terrifying record of Eli Wiesel's (the author) memories of death of his family. This new translation by his wife, Morion Wiesel, corrects important detail and presents the most accurate rendering in English of Elie Wiese's testimony to what happened in the camps and his unforgettable message that this horror must never be allowed to happen again.

About the author:

Elie Wiesel is the author of more than forty internationally acclaimed works of fiction and non fiction. He has been awarded the presidential Medal of freedom, the United States pf America congressional Gold Medal, the French legion of Horror, and in 1986, the Nobel Peace Prize.

The next book is called Eyewitness Auschwitz; three years in the gas chambers. Filip Muller came to Auschwitch with on the the earliest transports from Slovakia in April 1942 and began working in the gassing installation and crematoria in May. He was still alive when the gassing ceased in November 1944. He saw multiple come and disappear; by sheer luck he survived. Muller is a source; one of few prisoners who saw the Jewish people die and lived to tell about it. Eyewitness Auschwitz is thus one of the key documents of the Holocaust.

About the Author:

Filip was born in 1922 in sered, Czechoslovakia. He was deported to Auschwitz in April 1942, where he was assigned prisoner number 29236. He worked as a prisoner in the Sonderkommando until the evacuation of the camp in January 1945 and was liberated in May 1945. Afterward he was unable to work until 1953 when he became an author is Prague.

The last book is titled Auschwitz and after. This is a memoir of life in the concentration camps and afterwards. This book includes Vignettes, poems, and a prose poem that speak eloquently of horror, heroism, and conscience.

About the Author:

Charlotte Delbo (1913 - 1985)ch female resistance leader, a non Jew who became important literary figure in postwar France. Among this book she is an author of many essays. Her masterpiece is the trilogy Aushwitz and After. Charlotte was a professor of theatre at Sarah Lawrence College and a very active, frequently published theater critic.
